Begin with listening
A private, respectful conversation can help a colleague feel heard. Ask about work pressures without requesting a diagnosis or personal clinical details. Give the person space to decide what they wish to share.
Focus on the workplace
Discuss workload, role clarity, team relationships, and available workplace support. Agree practical next steps together rather than making assumptions about someone’s health.
Know where to turn
An Employee Assistance Programme can provide a separate pathway for confidential professional support. Managers should not attempt to act as counsellors or collect counselling records.
